Canadian Martyrs Parish – Vision, Mission and Objectives

BACKGROUND:

Parish Council began VMOSA exercise in fall 2017.

In late fall 2017, parish conducted a survey of parishioners to help discern our thoughts and wishes.

The top 5 Ministries for focus in the parish in order of ranking were:

1. Faith Formation, 2. Parishioner socializing 3. Faith Outreach 4. Stewardship 5. Youth Ministry

Top 4 strategies identified were:

i) Feed the Hungry ii) One ministry commitment iii Christmas Social iv) Monthly prayer group

Top Parish Dreams:

  • Showed 21% of parishioners seemed happy with the parish’s direction, 70% were neutral, 10% were negative

  • Dreams were widely varied, but frequent themes included greater number of parishioners, especially youth attending the parish, continuing the close knit welcoming nature of the parish, fixing the parking question, becoming more active in community support.

WHAT IS VMOSA

VMOSA (Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategies, and Action Plans) – A community on a journey needs to choose a plan to improve the chances of getting to the desired destination.

VMOSA is a planning process used to help community groups define a vision and develop practical ways to enact change.

-VMOSA helps set and achieve short term goals while keeping sight of our long term vision.

VISION (THE DREAM)

Communicates how things would look if our faith community was perfect.

Canadian Martyrs’ proposed Vision:

Vision –   “ Forming Missionary Disciples “  in building the Kingdom of God.

MISSION (THE WHAT AND WHY)

Describing what our parish is going to do, and why it's going to do that. Mission statements are similar to vision statements, but they're more concrete, and they are definitely more "action-oriented" than vision statements.

Canadian Martyrs’ proposed Mission:

Mission - We serve the people in our parish, community and Diocese by living out the evangelizing mission of Christ with Faith, Hope and Love.

OBJECTIVES (HOW MUCH OF WHAT WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY WHEN)

Our next step is to develop the specific objectives that are focused on achieving our mission.

This is part of what we are calling on you today to help with.

Objectives refer to specific measurable results for the initiative's broad goals.

Objectives generally lay out how much of what will be accomplished by when.

Proposed Parish Objectives – next 18 months (to July 2020)

1.  Increase our Faith by offering inspiring Catholic formation through

  • Assessing current children’s, youth and adult formation programs and surveyfor additional needs

  • Offering 1 additional formation program per year based on above needs

2.  Inspire Hope in others by compassionate and loving service to those in need through

  • Increasing to 2 times annually when Parishioners serve at Diocesan Feed the Hungry program

  • Forming a Seniors Ministry team for visitations and parish social events

3.  Demonstrate Love in action by the generous stewardship of our time, talent and

      Treasure through:

  • Calculating current number of parishioners serving in Ministry and increasing this number by 10% per year

  • Creating a Ministry Mentorship program for potential Ministry Leaders, assisting current ministry leaders to develop succession plans with a goal of 3 year term rotations

4.  Share Faith, encourage Hope and spread Love through parish socialization

      Opportunities

  • Establish a parish Social Activities Ministry to strengthen our parish family connections

  • Hold a full day Canadian Martyrs parish family event in September

  • Establish full coverage of parishioners serving as Weekend Mass coffee hosts

Nomination Box

Nominate yourself - Consider where you might begin to serve in the parish….

Nominate another parishioner - If you believe there is a parishioner who is interested and would be a good candidate for a ministry but is too shy to volunteer

Forms are included in this week’s bulletin and are also available beside the nomination box.

The nomination box is located in the church lobby.

Why nominate?

  • Just like in every family, every person in the family has a role with responsibilities

  • Applies to everyone, big and small

  • So everyone is encouraged to nominate at least one person

  • This is for service for 12 months, starting in 2019

  • You will be free to withdraw or change to another ministry after 12 months.

    • Help on recruiting successors is appreciated and fits the proposed mentorship objective for parish ministries

Our Parish Community needs you.

As a disciple of Christ, we encourage you to please sign up to assist.
