The process of acquiring a new door for the Brebeuf Room to replace the aging and disintegrating plastic folding door on the room was begun when Fr. Vincent suggested it would be good to try and have it replaced as one of the projects for the parish’s 50th Anniversary year. Quote requests were then issued and the contract was awarded to DIRTT (Doing It Right This Time) Environmental Solutions Ltd., an international award winning company based in Calgary who produced the first LEAF folding wall in North America for us.
The folding wall was designed by Jim LeGuilloux who is a member of a founding family at our neighbouring St. Luke’s Parish. The stained glass design is modeled after the stained glass pattern on the windows in the sanctuary and symbolizes how we as Catholic’s are to take the grace we receive from the sacraments in the sanctuary and carry them out into the world around us. Stained glass in churches has long been used as a visual example of how a Christian only truly ‘comes alive’ when the light of God shines through them for others to see. The red color in the glass symbolizes Christ’s life giving sacrifice for us and the blue color follows a long held tradition of being Mary’s color. The glass was designed to be opaque rather than clear and reminds us of St. Paul’s exhortation in 1 Corinthians 13:12 “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. ” The cross pattern on the centre panel is taken from the design on the large metal crucifix over the tabernacle in the sanctuary and conveys how we are to carry Christ with us out into the modern world. The large heavy wood beam that supports the folding wall on 3 sides was chosen for its rustic character that harkens back to the times of the Canadian Martyrs who laboured as missionaries in Canada in the 17th century and is meant to inspire us to have the same missionary zeal as the saints who are our parish’s patrons.
An interesting human story related to the door is that one of the 3 founders of the company that created the door - DIRTT Environmental Solutions Ltd.- was a close personal friend of long time parishioner Enzo Serpentini who passed away in 2013 and whose wife Brenda is still active in our parish, and since Enzo had been such an inspiration to the founder he had a personal note regarding Enzo built into the frame of the folding wall in remembrance of him.
Sincere thanks go out to all the parishioners who have, and continue to, donate so generously towards the cost of this beautiful new 50th Anniversary year addition to our parish.
